xPad is already taken (although it is a MacOSX editor) as is Xpad (a sticky note app built on GTK+).

I like the name as it is (apart from being unsure is it is Programmer's or Programmers), so pNotepad seems like a good option.

Maybe use a non-English word (or base the new name on one or more words)?

Blocchetto (Italian)
Yoteibunsho (Japanese, sort of)

(I am no linguist, I just looked up words on various translation sites and making up random words)

I would really go for pNotepad, since:

- the domain name is already here (not a big issue, but anyway...)
- I'm already used to Programmer's Notepad, so dump people like me can think 'oh yeah, it's the same program, just the name has changed' lol
- it sounds just great (like PeanutNotepad, without the Nut... because it does not get you nuts.)

I'm afraid my humour only affects myself so I stop here...

But definitely: pNotepad.

cheers - Lionel

This is not necessarily always the case. Gaim is now called Pidgin, and is as popular as ever (it looks better too). Most MSN products are now called Live. Google's also made quite a few name changes with no apparent success loss. Before F3 was called JavaFX, there was hardly the buzz there is now about it. Same goes for AB5k and Glossitope. Even Java was originally called Oak (they didn't stick to it because there was already another language with that name).

I'd say movie sequels are difficult to compare as they're not exactly the same product maintaining a the same name but a whole new product as sequence of another. And they just keep part of the name, as a way to make it easier to establish a connection between the different movies. Still, it's common for them to have a more specific subtitle (like in "Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi"), and some trilogies even have completely different names for all movies like "Amores Perros", "21 Grams" and "Babel".

The other examples you gave are all about products that were already big when they changed the name (though I'd agree that changing a name to a symbol, doesn't seem like a good idea ever, if you want people to reference you in a logical sentence :) ). I think the popularity of the application that we now know (and love) as Programmer's Notepad is still very much short of its full potential.

A smaller, apostrophe-less name would likely make it simpler to search for PN and spread the word. Especially if it's as yummy as pNotepad (p?'n?t'p?d) :).

Don't change the name remember Inprise Borland, Prince Symbol. Who out sells Pink Floyd or Roger Waters. The is a lot of power and goodwill in a name. The movies keep the same name Rocky VI?, Mission Impossible 2, the Matrix Reloaded? they added another name to the sequel. Programmers Notepad the notepad for non programmers too.

I actually kind of like the PeanutPad pun, though I like pNotepad better. You could say the pronunciation is PeanutPad and/or have a peanut on the application logo/icon.

I like this idea :)

I think Programmer's Notepad is perfect. It states its function right in the title. But if you're to shorten it, why not just shorten it to pNotepad? You already have the domain :)

Some nice suggestions so far, I particularly like:

Nemo
xPad
Redux

so far. I agree with jumpfroggy in that the current name is a bit old hat and causes people grammatical "issues"! I also would like a shorter and perhaps less generic name.

Finally, definitely no use of symbols or iAnything.

Unipad
Nemo
I like xPad (as generic and trendy as it is)
Maybe a play on simon / simon-says
Notepad GT (hah, car humor)
FooEdit
Edut
Redux
Could go with animals (ie. Thundebird, Firefox, Panda AV, ClamAV)
Word Pad Text Edit Editor Programmer Dev Developer Design Type Write

"Programmer's Notepad" always sounded a little late-90's to me, plus it's confusing between "Programmer's Notepad" and "Programmers Notepad". Last, it could be shorter. Don't get me wrong, I like it a whole lot more than Notepad++ or similar names; it has a lot of character.

-1 for iAnything, anything++, or unpronounceable acronyms.

Alright, feeling slightly foolish now that I've tried it with the newest version of PN ;) I was using Ella before. It appears that a relative path is now based on the root dir of pnotepad rather the directory pn is running in? Would be nice if this could be confirmed...
Awesome that my favorite text editor is still in active development,

Is there some way to make the path for the settings folder dependant on the location of the pn executable? If i use just use
<userSettings path="settings/" />
a settings directory is created in whatever directory the file I opened was in. I can't use an absolute path because the drive letter may change (running pn off a usb stick), and using an environment variable within the xml doesn't seem to work either (no surprise there really).
Thanks,

Ok, I tested it. It seems to run fine. Almost all the settings are being saved con the .ini file. In the registry still remain some entries. These are the ones I found but I didn't try ALL the options in the program:

-HKCU\Software\Echo Software\PN2

-HKCU\Software\Echo Software\PN2\AutoComplete

-HKCU\Software\Echo Software\PN2\AutoComplete\Find

-HKCU\Software\Echo Software\PN2\AutoComplete\FindToolbar

-HKCU\Software\Echo Software\PN2\AutoComplete\FindReplace

with some entries inside them. Correct me if I'm wrong but they are words that the user search using the "Find" menu.

Well I hope this is helpful. I think the program is "portable enough" to me but would be nice if it were "100% Portable".

Keep up the excellent work!!

Thanks for the quick response. I'll do that, but since I'm currently in a location where the download of .exe's is restricted (or .zip's or .rar's you name it) I'll have to wait until I get home.

Please try the current development build on the web site and follow Sam's instructions above for creating a config.xml file. Let me know if it works!

Hi, first of all: Great Program!! A came across it while I was looking at the development kit for NDS.

I also want to run it from my USB drive so I can take it everywhere with al the settings and without leaving "stuff" on the computers I use.

I wonder if all the settings can now be stored in the config file and how can be done or if it still in progress.

I've tried it this way. Here are my configurations:

Command: C:\Programme\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

Parameters: %d%f

By starting tool, IExplorer.exe process gets started but the task not and see no window.

FireFox works. :)

I think you should just need "%d%f" as the parameter for IE. Let me know if that doesn't work.
