Thanks Nux, I'll take a look. People have managed to get all of PN building with express, it's a bit fiddly. Have a search on here and you should turn up some instructions.

Hi!

Added an issue here with a proposed patch:
https://code.google.com/p/pnotepad/issues/detail?id=1146

Note that I've only tested the code on Visual C++ Express 2008 as a separate test project. I was not sure if I would be able to compile PN at all on an Express edition...

Interestingly you can make a Python script for that as running this:
pn.AddOutput("\n File \"C:\\Some\\Path\\YourFileName.ext\", line 123")

Will make a "link" in Ouput window to YourFileName.ext (line 123).

Only thing you would need to do is make a search for some text ("todo" in this case). Not sure how that would be most efficiently done in Python (or PyPN to be more exact).

Hey brain,

It is a handy feature which I use when I use netbeans. There are several other syntaxes also so to have it customisable would be nice.

It would be a good idea to post it here:

Currently GenX the tool we use for writing the XML does not support beautified writing (it's designed to output canonical XML). It's something I'd be willing to accept a patch for, but won't have time to work on any time soon.

It may not be that difficult to do, as it should be a case of finding where end element writing is handled in genx.c and add indent/line breaks. Care would need to be taken over indents where the inner content of an element is text - changing the output to use indent or line break there would change the content of the file.

Hi.

Is it possible to setup PN so that it saves all (or most) of it's configuration files in a beautified version (or at least with line breaks).

The point is to allow users to edit files by hand and use diff tools for project configuration files (both for things like CVS/SVN and synchronising user settings between computers).

If it's not implemented would you say it would be hard or easy to implement?

The feature I would like is for Programmer's Notepad to hunt through all the files in a project and gather up all the places I've written TODO and then a comment and show them in a handy place.

I know I can do this in 'find in files' (which is the current method) but when I am refactoring, I find I use the find-in-files system a lot and can't have my todo list open and handy.

Yes, this is something that visual studio does.

I'm a new user and having some troubles with the search and replace function. I have created 2 projects, but when I try to do a search the "current project" is always greyed-out as well as the "in selection". When I go to the replace function I do have "in selection" active, but not "current project".

My guess is that as you open and close the different project files your Current Directory is changing. To see this, instead of calling make directly try having a batch file that calls make, something like:

@echo off
echo Running make in:
cd
make

At the top of the output you should see (e.g.)

Running make in
c:\projects\X\A

This should then change depending on whether your build is going to work. You should be able to use the project path in your PN make command to have a batch file switch to the correct place before running make.

I hav a very strange effect using Programmer Notepad 2.0.8.718 (comming with WinAVR 2010-01-10).

I create a project group and add two existing projects. The 2 projects (I name them A and B) are located in a own subdirectory X\A and X\B. Now I save the project group in directory X.

If I try to make one of the project, it doesn't work.
I close the PN and restart it again.
I open the project group and try to make a project - it doesn't work
I close the project group and open one of the projects directly
I make the project - it works
Now I close the project and reopen the project group via "Open Projects"
... it doesn't work
Now I reopen a project directly, it works
Now I reopen the project group via "Recent projects" - it works!!!

It seems that something with the project directory seems to be buggy and depend on the way how to open a project group.

Has anyone an idea what's going on???

Spot on, it's the magic folders. I'm planning to try and rewrite this bit of functionality at some point.

The original reason for storing all the files in the .pnproj file was to allow external tools to read the file easily. However, it seems that it's going to be better for most users to just store files that have project settings applied, leaving the rest to be auto-discovered each time.

It requires the .NET framework v1.1 - do you have that installed? That is the most common cause of this error.

"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application." Not much to go easy on :(

Thanks for the info on how to add project-specific global tools though. That's a great start!

Please try in 2.0.6.0 which has been out for some time now, if it still doesn't work then file a bug. Thanks.

There is now a project template editor available here: http://pnotepad.org/files/templateeditor.zip

It's early software so go easy with it!

You can create a separate XML file in the PN\tools directory containing tools related to your project (just copy and paste from usertools.xml once you're happy with them). This is how it works at the moment, I may consider merging the project settings file and tools file but it adds a good bit of complexity.

How do you rename a PN project? I'm talking about the entry immediately under the "New Project Group" line in the "Projects" window. You can click & type there, but if you close the project & reopen it, the old name comes back.

I'm using V2.0.5.48.
