I'd like to see such a task list built-in similar to VS:

TODO, HACK, UNDONE...

Maybe as a CTags enhancement?

Interestingly you can make a Python script for that as running this:
pn.AddOutput("\n File \"C:\\Some\\Path\\YourFileName.ext\", line 123")

Will make a "link" in Ouput window to YourFileName.ext (line 123).

Only thing you would need to do is make a search for some text ("todo" in this case). Not sure how that would be most efficiently done in Python (or PyPN to be more exact).

Hey brain,

It is a handy feature which I use when I use netbeans. There are several other syntaxes also so to have it customisable would be nice.

It would be a good idea to post it here:

The feature I would like is for Programmer's Notepad to hunt through all the files in a project and gather up all the places I've written TODO and then a comment and show them in a handy place.

I know I can do this in 'find in files' (which is the current method) but when I am refactoring, I find I use the find-in-files system a lot and can't have my todo list open and handy.

Yes, this is something that visual studio does.

Would anyone else find this useful or is it just me?

I'm trying to change the current scheme for the document via a pypn script, but I can't see how to do it. I'm sure it's easy, but I can't see it in the documents.

I've tried:

    pn.CurrentDoc().CurrentScheme = 'HTTP'

However the attribute is read-only and so I can't set it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi,

PN currently supports setting file types via either an extension (use a '.' prefix) or a full filename (no prefix). Since it already has a regex engine available to it, it would be very useful if matches to file types could use regex or even just wildcards:

e.g.
Match files "*_raw_http.log" and assign HTML
All other "*.log" are assigned Plain Text

Regards,

That sounds great. Thanks.

I've been thinking that sorting the Tags window would be a really great improvement also. I thought I'd mention it now, as it might make sense to make both changes at the same time, if the two lists are both backed by the same set.

First, let me say that I love programmer's notepad. I use it for java development, and it's by far the best editor I've found.

One thing that really bothers me, though, is the order that open files are listed in the Open Files window. I'd really like to be able to sort this list alphabetically.
It appears that they are listed in the order that they were opened in, but as I work, I tend to get many files open at once, and I have no idea which order they were opened in. This makes it very difficult to navigate my open files. I've found it's easier to just use the Projects window, and re-open each file as I need it, rather than searching for the file I already have open.

Ideally, I think this ought to be a setting. Maybe it could be in a context menu that appears on right click in the Open Files window - just like the sort order appears in the windows explorer context menu.

Thanks for a great product. If there's already some way of doing what I want, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, please consider it in a future release.

1. Auto reload, the reason that currently reloads do not take place automatically is to avoid losing user changes. It's possible that we could support this as long as the file remains unchanged, but no work is planned on this currently.

You could hold the Ctrl key, then mark every occurrence with the mouse. Finally you can change the name at all marked positions simultaneously. But I think, search/replace is a quicker why. ;) Why not use that? What advantage has your feature? I can’t see it.

A feature I would love to see in PN is called "synchronized editing" in RJ TextEd. Basically, you highlight a block of code then edit a variable name and all instances of that variable name in the highlighted block change as well.

I know that Search and Replace accomplishes this, but a quick way to do it would be nifty.

Hello alltogether,

I am using Programmers Notepad for a while now and I am quite satisfied with its functionality and handling. But there are a few things which I think can be enhanced though. Some of them are dealing with the auto reload function.

- First of all: The auto reload function. There is an option for deactivating the auto reload for a specific file - but I do not find an option for the opposite purpose. In my opinion, it is not comfortable if you have to accept the reload of a specific file every time it is changed outside
- Second: The auto reload function ;) As there is not option to automatically reload all opened files the following may happen: I open a few files in Programmers Notepad, change them (without saving) and also change them from outside where I save them. After that I click the 'save all' button in Programmers Notepad - now I lose the changes which where made from outside programmers notepad. I think it would be great to get informed that there where also changes made from outside.

There are also other improvements I could imagine which I will post another day ;)

Best regards
Sycko

If I were the one writing this application, my main motivation will be UI. Especially, _simple_ find in files(maybe incremental), and a simple shell extension for opening different file formats like Notepad++ does: "Edit with PN" button. You would be amazed how much people chose Notepad++ just for that stupid but useful shell feature.

Very strange, I can't reproduce this. Which version of Programmer's Notepad, and which version of Windows are you running? Do you have anything like Intellimouse installed?

I see, yes this is doable, although it will need me to make a few tweaks. When you send text to the output window I already use regular expressions to parse that, so I should be able to make something simple that allows this form of highlighting more generally.

Thanks for this reply. It sounds very encouraging so I think I'll progress with using PN. An example of an item of markup syntax that I need to hightlight would be a list like this, eg:

   :Name: John Smith
:Address: 50 Church Road
:Tel: 01899 00898

I want to be able to hightlight the label in bold. The regex I use is...

    ^\t+:.*?:\s+

Anchor to start of line
Followed by at least one tab
Followed by a colon
Followed by any string
Followed by a colon
Followed by one or more space characters

Could this be implemented in PN?

Hi Rob,

1. Currently PyPN allows you to add entries to the Scripts window. PN now supports extending the menu as well, this just hasn't been added to PyPN yet. No reason why it can't be supported.

2. You can do everything that text clips can from PyPN - you have full access to the edit control (Scintilla) which has a very rich API.

3. There is currently no regex-based parser like in EditPad, but there are various ways of supporting different languages. Perhaps if you could post a sample of your code we can work out the best way to get highlighting.

4. Yes, a script entry or menu item would let you do this easily. PN also supports a project properties system that allows you to specify extra properties for the user to set on a project. These are then stored in the XML file along with the rest of the project details. This can be useful for storing and providing an interface for external tools settings.

Simon.

Hi PN Users

I have just written a lightweight markup language which I want to integrate within an editor and it seems to me from what I've read so far PN may be the product I am looking for. However, I'd just like to check that what I want to achieve is feasible within PN before I start out. Please note - I am not asking how to do any of this. I just want to know if any of it is possible.

The markup looks quite a lot like wiki markup but with a lot more structures available. I'd like to be able to create an off-line WYSIWYM editor by adding a Python module to PN. The parsing program is currently written in Perl but I was planning to port it to Python anyway.

These are my issues:

(1) Would it be possible, using PyPN to create an additional menu bar to be displayed within PN or is the Tools collection the only way to run programs?

(2) I could use the clips collections for the markup but some of what I want to do does not quite fit that paradigm. For instance I want to prepend a character to every line in a highlighted block and indent the whole block. I'm not clear how far Python will interface with the existing functions in PN? Am I asking too much?

(3) I want to create a syntax coloring scheme. I've already done it within EditPad but that editor allows regular expressions to match patterns. That's quite important as my opening and closing tags are always the same so the pattern matching has to be quite sophisticated. From my cursory look at PN I can't see any regexs in the schemes.

(4) The final operation will be to save the file, send it to the parser for translation, create the output file, save it to a default folder previously set up by the user and then finally open the output file in a browser. I would imagin that this last bit will be easy as it can all be done by a Python script kicked off by clicking a button of some sort.

I hope I am not asking too much here but I am not minded to write an entire editor from scratch!

Thanks.

SCM explorer icons in File Browser (simon)

SCM hooks would almost certainly be a larger job :) The reason PN didn't just host the explorer control originally is that it can be a slow beast and more complicated to customize and optimise than a natively written tree. I will be looking at the best way to support the SCM integration. You should already be able to use the Tortoise commands from the explorer menu integration, you just can't see the status icons.

There's an issue for tracking this:
