Ohhh ... well, I turned off the bolding and with syntax highlighting on it went ok.

I'll test now the column mode to see if it behaves more or less like UE, but it's a VERY good thing since I think I don't have any more problems to do the switch.

The bolding "problem" (if it's not a normal behavior) still remains.

Thanks

1) Sorry, I should have selected the same block of text. My bad.
2) You're right with the tab indents, it's the same on UE.
3) Here you have a pastebin for the text I'm using: http://pastebin.com/pFrDaSVF

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6138/uecolumnmodesamesel.jpg
http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/7020/pn2columnmodesamesel.jpg
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2734/pn2columnmodesameselnos.jpg

I turned off syntax highlighting and it worked ok, so I don't get the problem at the end of the line on lines 26 and 28. So it seems the problem is triggered when syntax highlighting is on, but it sucks working without it so I'd consider this as a "problem".

I also tried this with 2.3 RC portable edition and it's the same. I'm on Windows XP SP3 if it's of any help.

Hi Carlos,

I just tried this out here and am seeing different results, so want to work out why that is:

http://www.pnotepad.org/img/blocksel.png

The highlight start point in your two images is different, so I can't be sure which issue you're referring to.

If it's the indents down the left, then that's because the indents are tab characters which can't be cut in two. What happens when you select down that column in UE, and are you using tabs there too?

Down the right hand side it would appear that the bolding of the !important bit in the CSS is maybe causing those characters to be bigger than their non-bold counterparts, thus enlarging the appearance of the selection.

I'm not sure what's happening on the last line of the selection, but I'm not seeing that in 2.3.

Simon.

Hi,

I'm almost in love with PN2, but I have this annoying problem with it's column mode. Thing is the column mode should draw a perfect rectangle and it's currently selecting characters that are not there. I really don't know how to explain it better, so I took a couple screenshots, one from UltraEdit (which has the column mode done right) and the other for PN2 which shows the problem.

http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/4554/uecolumnmode.jpg
http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/6188/pn2columnmode.jpg

I know this is probably because of Scintilla, but is there any chance this could be fixed ? I'd really want to switch from UE since PN2 really works better in a lot of regards (like folding which is really slow on big files on UE).

Also, thanks for writing this fantastic editor.

Hi Simon.

I'm having troubles with those multi-selections. I've found some docs on wxwidgets page, but I was unable to make AddSelection (nor SetSelectionNCaret) working right. I mean the text does get selected but the cursor is not blinking and after running:

sct = scintilla.Scintilla(pn.CurrentDoc())
sct.SetSelectionNCaret (0, 2)
sct.SetSelectionNAnchor (0, 4)

A paste function is not working. Can I do something to somehow refresh the state of selections or something like that?

BTW. Is there a way to refresh code (after changes) without reloading the PN? I mean when I change my python script do I have to close and open PN again?

Also, if you like the Alt selection bit, try using Ctrl and clicking in multiple places - you can insert/delete into multiple places that are not all in one line.

Mind-blowing. Seriously. I was speechless when I saw the possibilities opening... It might actually be faster then RegExp sometimes :-). I can like add class to a HTML table diagonally :-).

As for the API - do you know if it's something stable? I've searched a lot and haven't found any specs/docs about it.

ReplaceSel
method doesn't seem to work well (replaces last/main selection) and I see no new method that would work as when you do CTRL+C, CTRL+V. After some digging I'm thinking of using
SelectionCount
with
GetSelectionNAnchor
and
GetSelectionNCaret
. I'm missing only one method - is there something similar to
SetTextRange
or is there a way to replace one selection without breaking others?

Hi Nux,

Yes all the APIs are hopefully hanging off the Scintilla object to get what you're looking for. Have a look at
RectangularSelectionAnchor
and
RectangularSelectionCaret
. There are also virtual space versions of those methods too (virtual space being where the block selection includes space that's not actually in the document). To work out whether you have a rectangular selection use
SelectionIsRectangle
or
SelectionMode
. To see these and all the rest of the scintilla APIs try running this as a script:

s = scintilla.Scintilla(pn.CurrentDoc())
pn.AddOutput(str(dir(s)).replace(',', '\n'))

Also, if you like the Alt selection bit, try using Ctrl and clicking in multiple places - you can insert/delete into multiple places that are not all in one line.

Enjoy!

Hi. I'm just wondering if it is possible to know that the selected block is a rectangular selection and how to make operations on this selection? What I would need is at least an information at which line does the selection starts and ends and probably column numbers... Or maybe simply dimensions and a starting position... But some kind of access to a collection of lines in this selection would be wonderful.

I'm asking because I want to do a script that would add tags around each selected line of code in this block. Picture for example a space indented table to which you want to add an extra cell in each row or add links inside this cells...

BTW. I just discovered something amazing :-). When I select few lines of code with ALT pressed I can write on few lines of code at once and even delete characters on each of these lines. This is great :D!

I'm a new user and having some troubles with the search and replace function. I have created 2 projects, but when I try to do a search the "current project" is always greyed-out as well as the "in selection". When I go to the replace function I do have "in selection" active, but not "current project".

Is this a known issue? Thanks!

I'd like to contribute a little suggestion.
As of now, when you select multiple parts in a textdocument and, say, want to wrap it in a HTML-tag from text clips, all selections are combined to one and added to the first gap.

See how I mean this:
Step one: select multiple text parts
http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=pn165yn.png
Second step: doubleclick a text-clip
http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=pn2j6rx.png

Is it possible that this will generate two new a-tags?

And second suggestion: If you select a second text part, the statusbar will only tell you how many characters you've selected on the new part, would be cool if we'd had a total, like "53 characters selected, 23 in current selection".

The selection stops after the last character on the bottom line, if a line above has a longer text you just miss that one. Would be great if that could be fixed in a future release.

Awesome. I kind of figured this should have been a howto request and not a feature request, but I didn't see any mention of it in the help file.

Thanks.

To make box selections just hold down alt while you drag your selection.

Hope that helps!

Hello. Thanks for making PN2. I recently switched from Notepad++, but I found it to be infuriating. PN2 looks exactly like what I was looking for.

Anyway, I was showing my dad PN2 (he uses pspad) and he liked it except for one thing. I can't find it in the edit menu or in the settings dialog box. The ability to make a box selection. To allow you to select a box of text that isn't line wrapped and paste it. So you can select a column instead of selecting the entire lines.

I don't think this would be possible in a script, but I haven't really delved into that yet.

Thanks again.

Search in selection is currently only enabled for replacing within a selection, I hadn't thought about it being useful with just searching.

I'm fairly new with PN after having too many problems with jedit... Anyway, I can't get Search Selection to work. I select some text, do a control-F and the only option I ever have is Current Document with the rest grayed out...
Any help would be appreciated.
Eddy

If you hold down ctlr-alt you can make
rectangular selections with either the mouse or
keyboard. That's a rather significant feature to
not be mentioned anywhere, but I'm not going
to complain, I hate documenting things too.
