Maybe it is just my monitor but I cannot tell the difference between the selected and non-selected tabs in the newest version of notepad. The current tab is highlighted in #FFFFFF, while the rest of the tabs are #F0F0F0.

Would it be possible to tweak the colors using a new setting, registry key, Windows color scheme adjustment, or by some other method?

Running PM 2.2.0.2240 on Windows Vista with standard color scheme as far as I know.

Thanks.

I just had a look at pn 2.15 and the order of the file tabs is now remembered between sessions. Thank you very much for that fix Simon!!!

Although there is one last tiny thing about the file tabs that I'd like to be added if possible:
Currently, when pn is restarted, the rightmost file tab always gets the focus. Would it be possible to also restore which file tab was active in the previous session? I would prefer if pn would start with the exact same file tab activated as in the session before.

I hope this could be added if it's not too difficult to implement.

I don't want to enforce things with that issue, but I'd like to bump this though, especially as I'm not the only user who is concerned about that issue.

Pnotepad is getting better and better with every release (Thank you Simon!), and I have to admit that the one and only thing stopping me from using it as my everyday editor is this annoying (and uncommon) tab-order behaviour.

As you said, Simon, it's not that easy to fix and I know there are more important things on your list, but I still hope you can find a way to fix this in some later release.

This would render this almost perfect editor to a completely perfect one.

Having the tabs show up in a different place when I start up drives me crazy. I really find it irritating. I hope it isn't too difficult to fix. I have tried 6 different notepads in the past couple months and I like most everything about this one except this one issue. If this issue gets fixed, I'll donate some money. And I'll spread the word to all my programmer collegues. How about that for bribery :)

Sorry, I keep forgetting to reply to this! Yes, it's a known issue and one that would be nice to fix. It's not been high on my priorities because it's not the easiest thing to fix. The list of the tabs saved in the file is controlled by the order in which Windows chooses to enumerate the tabs - this isn't the order of the tabs, but is somewhat controlled by recent tab use.

To fix it means we need to get the order from somewhere else and apply it to the list of tabs being saved. Hopefully I'll get to it in a future release.

OK, I know this might not be a big issue, but any chance of a comment?

Personally I prefer the file tabs having always the same order, and this also is quite a usual behaviour in almost every 'tabbed' application.

In the stable release they are different implementations of recent use :) When you turn the option on, PN takes over from Windows itself and implements visual-studio like window ordering (my preference). This means that if you press Ctrl-tab, then release, then ctrl-tab again, you'll toggle between two files.

In the testing release (very soon to be stable) you'll find that recent use hasn't changed, but if you turn this option off you now get firefox-style tab ordering.

I'm trying Pnotepad for a while now and it is really great, but one thing annoys me a tiny bit:

I have the option 'remember last open files and projects' between sessions activated.

If I restart pnotepad, the active filetab from the last sessions always gets moved to the right of all other filetabs.

Example:
opened file tabs:
file1 | File2 | file3

If I now activate file1 and then restart pnotepad, the tab order looks like this:
File2 | file3 | file1

Would it be possible that the tab order is always kept? I always work with a set of preferred files and find it a little disturbing that the file tabs get re-arranged anytime I restart pnotepad after activating some other file tab. If other users prefer the current behaviour, this could be introduced as a new option, e.g.

[ ] keep tab order between sessions

Anyway, thank you for this great piece of software!

Jumpfroggy is right about the reason for the current recent use behaviour. I'm definitely going to add the different behaviour, and have just set it for being done before the next stable release. Should get to it soon.

Couldn't seem to see an existing issue for this, I know there was one at Sourceforge and could have sworn it had made it over to Google Code. Never mind, here's a new one to track:

Karma; the "ping-ponging" is using most-recently-used order, which is more like windows' Alt+Tab. You're thinking in the "left to right" order, like firefox/ie's tabs. It's a personal preference which one is a better default, and you can definitely change it to suit.

However, I agree with the OP that Control+Tab should move right, Control+Shift+Tab should move left. Hopefully it'll get fixed sometime soon.

For me, the expected behavior is Ctrl-Tab to move forward in the tabs and Ctrl-Shift-Tab to move backwards. Programmer's Notepad instead seems to ping-pong between all tabs which is unexpected.

2 things:

It would be nice if you could change tabs in the find dialog as you would with the editor - e.g., ctrl-tab & ctrl-shift-tab to flip between find, replace, find in files.

Also, it seems if I switch editor tabs using ctrl-tab, my entire screen seems to do a refresh. If I change tabs by clicking on the tab with my mouse, the full screen refresh doesn't occur. The switch is much smoother. Odd!

The Ctrl-tab behaviour (with that option turned off) is the windows basic behaviour which isn't tab controlled but Z-Order controlled which means windows selects windows based on its own visibility order (confusing I know).

Using v2.0.6.1, I have turned off "Tab order controlled by recent use". However, pressing Control+Tab goes in reverse order through the tabs (right to left). And pressing Control+Shift+Tab goes in forward order (left to right).

Expected: Control+Tab should go forward/right, adding Shift should go backward/left.

Another fast switching option could be available via keys ALT+TabNumber. Example: ALT+1 would switch to tab number 1, ALT+2 to tab number 2, etc. Very helpful if you have 3-7 tabs open.

Now that you explained it makes sense. But option to have "normal" (tab based) ordering would be prefered for me and probably for many other users.

The "hard to guess" order is a stack ordered according to when you last used a window.

So, if you have three windows A, B and C, if you select C and then B then the following will be true:

press Ctrl-Tab, you'll see C.
press Ctrl-Tab again, you'll see B.
press Ctrl-Tab again, C again.

Hold Ctrl and press tab twice you'll see A.

This form of navigation is common in windows editors and IDEs (like Visual Studio). You can switch to standard windows tab ordering (still not controlled by the tabs) with options.

There will probably be a "tab order" controlled option in the next version.

Is it possible to switch tabbing through open windows? Current tabbing with CTRL+TAB or CTRL+SHIFT+TAB does not follow actual order displayed on the screen but some internal "hard-to-guess" order.
