Yes, this behaviour can be frustrating with very long lines, although it is quite common in a lot of editors. Please feel free to file an issue and at some point I may find time to look into it!

I'm running into a similar issue -- the one thing about PN that's aggravating me. When I'm selecting text with the mouse, if I'm scrolled right and move the mouse up or down to a line that's short enough that its end is scrolled out of view to the left, the display scrolls back to the left. This makes it very difficult to select text on long lines using a mouse, because almost inevitably, I drift just a little up or down as I'm selecting, and end up all the way back to the left.

If auto-scrolling could be disabled while the mouse button remained down, that should solve the problem.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I do want to see virtual space but it will not be done for the next release - there are a number of other features that I'm working on that will take all of my time to get done.

I would welcome any development effort from an interested person to try and get this done, it would need to be modifications to the Scintilla project.

not to be a pain, however I don't want to let this issue die. are there going to be plans to add "virtual space" to the next release ?

Simon, yes, sort of:

abcd
ab
abcd

Placing the caret after the
c
in the first line, press arrow down places it after the
b
, next arrow down places it after the
c
in the last line.

...and I swear that PN2 doesn't always behave like this. Need to find a testcase, though :)

Yes,
if the line i am scrolling to has less characters than the line i am currently on the cursor will go to the EOL position on that line. This is the problem.

The cursor should stay in whatever x position i have it in and not jump arround.

if i want to put comments at the end of statements i have to constantly tab over to the end to add my "//". when i could just go down one line.

Example...

if((switch & option) == PRESSED)  // notes
else // more notes

Bjoern, do you mean the way that when you have text such as this:

a
abc
deffgggg
sdfsd
asdfasdfasdf

and move your cursor from the end of the last line up and down that it keeps trying for the end of the line? PN does that.

So how about it guys? can you stick in an option for virtual space on the next release ?

this is the only thing keeping me from droping my other editor. will even donate.

Some editors (e.g. VS.NET) do keep the column index without the (in my opinion) idiotic virtual space. PN2 not behaving this way is (sort of) annoying :]

Thanks, that's too bad ;(
it seems the more editors I use, they seem to default to this no "virtual space" option. I don't know why. its very cumbersome when you want to move the cursor up a few lines and its x position keeps changing, then you have to either use the mouse or left and right cursor buttons to re position it back to where it was at to begin with.

Ah I see. No, this feature is often referred to as "virtual space" and there is no way to do it in PN at the moment.

Thanks, but i might have not been too clear on my question.

I need my cursor to go past EOL. is there a way to allow it to do that ?

Yes, you can turn on the default "Visible Line Endings" in the Defaults bit of the options dialog or turn it on per editor window with "View|Line End Markers" - presuming you mean PN2?
