It was a really useful per-document indication of the view options that were enabled, and provided easy toggling of those options for the mouse user. The main toolbar is by necessity modal (i.e. it can only show you details for the currently selected edit window).</p> <p>Interestingly some people have suggested removing the main status bar and having a per-window status bar instead. The end result would look pretty much the same for single document users, but would provide a much more useful experience for those that edit multiple documents at a time in a split view. That's the mini toolbar.
