Open file with default application

Would be nice if you could shellexec any file, so that it opens in the default application set in your os.

One can achieve this by running cmd.exe /c %d%f or a batch file, but the stupid console window will pop-up and stay as long as the tool is running. Or you capture output, but it will open the output dock afterwards even if you don't want/need it.

Therefore, this requires little new code. Perhaps as entry in the Console I/O tab > Capture output > Ignore (suppress output)?

Or as new checkbox "Run non-executable file (will start the default application if extension is associated)"

Hi,

Maybe a way so that the user could build and integrate a snippet file?

Thanks.

@theA51TS This is the SmartStart feature which already exists. Go to Options|New Files and add !#... to switch to bash. I've already added python and perl shbangs as defaults for future releases.

I don't know if this fits this category, but a method of using the "!#/..." as a means to detect bash or some other script file without an extension.

I agree with zinahe. Put them on the website but don't include them with pnotepad by default.

Well I would really like to see the ability to create a new tool based upon a current one. i.e. copy a tool. For example I have several version of my C++ Compilers (debug, compile, compile to assembly, etc...) It is kind of a pain to copy these setting over just to make a few minor changes.

Sorry Simon, but I think this is just a waste of time. I mean, the feature is already there, and I see no reason to spoon feed the programmers. May be I am preaching to the choir, but "PN" is a programmer's notepad, and we should let the programmers configure their own tools, please.

As a programmer, I can say that some of the joy of using PN comes from customizing it to fit my needs.

IMHO, We should be thinking about new capabilities to build into the tool instead.

Zinahe A.

Yup, view in default is a good idea for XML too.

A couple of sample compilers showing configuration would be a good idea, and failing that some files you can download from the website that set up the tools for you for different toolchains could be useful I guess.

XML could have some "view in the default browser" too.

I think any default tools would be great even as a "working example" (too see what they can be and to build your own tools on them). And to have an easy start it would good idea to add some compiler configuration, but (if this is possible/not too complicated) PN should check (before running) if the compiler is available and display a warning that would explain where to change a path to it.

It's clear that PN should come with some default tools configured. What tools should I add by default and why?

The obvious:

Default Browser
Set for HTML files to view them.

Run
Set for batch/cmd files, to run them and capture output.

What else should be configured? Should PN include compiler/run configurations for languages even though the user may not have those tools installed?
