Can build PN with free tools? (mingw, visual studio express)

I did read the developer page, and I know the answer is probably no... that being said, is there any support for building PN with mingw?

I'm trying to find an open source text editor that works well, but that I can contribute to as well. I do C++ development in my spare time and I'd love to dig into a text editor. That being said, it wont be possible for me unless there's a free toolset (mingw, VS express, etc) available.

Programmers Notepad looks really clean (tried out Notepad++, had lots of features but was really messy). I'd really like to use it, but just wanted to make sure there's a future in it too.

PN is based on WTL which is still not available for VS express sadly. More and more ATL-based projects are gradually being open sourced which is good, so there is some hope.

I'm interested in the idea of porting the GUI portions to GTK/whatever as a fully open-source alternative but at the moment I don't have time to work on that. It would be a great project for someone, as it would enable PN to be easily ported.

There were some efforts that got older ATL working (there's a codeproject article on getting WTL going with VS Express). The only thing stopping PN from building that is one reliance on attributed COM which could very easily be fixed up to work without. This would probably enable you to use VS Express.

Thanks for the info, good to know. I'll look into it when I have more time... even if that page (find and replace dialog, right? Or was it the Save All Files dialog?) needed to be disabled to build in VS Express, at least someone like me could work on the rest of PN.

I personally don't care for GTK much. I use Gimp all the time, but it just doesn't behave appropriately in a windows environment. I've liked a few wxWidgets apps I've used, they actually behave like native programs and are keyboard-friendly (unlike many GTK widgets on win and linux). I think I'll just get into PN with VS Express for a while before I look into any of that.

Also:... is there a way to get email updates when comments are posted? I didn't even realize I'd gotten responses. Thanks.

Hi - jumpfroggy - did you get PN building with VS Express ?? I have tried, but no luck as yet....

noah: no, unfortunately I haven't been playing with PN much lately. I just quit my job (voluntarily, no worries).

I found a copy of VS 2005 full, so I compiled PN through that no problems. I'll try Express again soon, hopefully we can figure out a way to do *something* in Express so people can help out easier. I'll post up when I play with it.
