Hi, I downloaded portable-pn209926.zip and pypn-0.11.926-py25.zip, and unzipped them to C:\PNotepad926, ran pn --findexts and then ran pn, but nothing shows up in the Scripts window, and none of the PYC files get generated.
Following the same steps with pn209921 works as expected.
Also, pypn-0.11.926-py25.zip didn't contain dotlog.py or test.py, FYI.

Thanks Todd, I guess that must be valid syntax in Python 2.6?
Also, test.py and dotlog.py have been deliberately removed. Test just contained a "hello world" script, and the included scripts are far more useful than that for learning PyPN now. The dotlog.py script duplicates functionality now built into the editor, so I removed it from PyPN.
I filed this issue to get this fixed for the next release:

Simon: It's time I started looking at Python 2.6 so I will test it and find where that change in syntax is noted. Now I see why the scripts were removed.
John: I just use a regular Python installation, but will try it with portable Python and see if I can get it to work.

When I try to install pypn-0.11.926-py26 the extension is not loaded during startup.
I added <extension path="pypn.dll"></extension> to my config.xml (pn --findexts would not do that)
But when I start Pnotepad, I see the following error in the outputwindow:
Script Import Error with pnxml.py: DLL load failed:
When checking pnpypn.dll with the Dependency Walker it shows me that two DLLs cannot be loaded:
msjava.dll
msvcr80.dll
I found a msvcr80.dll on my system (WinXP SP3) and copied that into the pn folder, but it still wouldn't load. There is no msjava.dll on my system.
Both dlls are loaded throug boost_python-vc80-mt-1_36.dll

I'm curious how you debugged this problem. I ran "pn --findexts" like the docs state, but that didn't work. Then I manually added it to config.xml per your post, but I didn't get the error in the output window. Also, I can't find any mention of "except x as y" in init.py. What's the next step to debug this? Is PyPN just broken right now?

Two things to look out for:
1. If you see this message in your output window:
Script Import Error with pnxml.py: DLL load failed:
...then PyPN is actually loading and this is currently normal. Because of the way Python 2.6 has been built and distributed PN cannot load the extra DLLs from python needed for expat. You should only lose your XML scripts and everything else should work.
2. Config.xml
This system was not usable where the program files directory was not writable (e.g. non-admin installs). Therefore by default PN now updates config.xml in the user settings directory instead of in the programmer's notepad directory. Check there to see if pypn was added correctly.

I just checked and this is now fixed in Python 2.6.2 so if you install that and the latest PyPN then you should be fine:

I just did exactly that on my work computer on a clean PN install and everything seems to be ok.

Yes!!! Thanks simon, I managed to fix my pypn install. I'm using python 2.5, so I didn't use your link but instead downloaded the py25 version from google code. The problem was the PN add-ons page shows a download link for pypn .8, which I assumed to the latest version:

But the google code one is newer. Running this version, I did get the syntax error and went in to fix init.py. The python 2.5 pypn should be fixed, since this is not valid python 2.5 syntax.
So glad to have my pypn finally working!

OK, thanks for the feedback. I wasn't seeing the scripts I expected, but I found out that it was related to the file type not the "error" message. But when I saw the error message I thought, loading the whole plugin failed.

What do you mean with "lose" the script? Should I delete it?

The config.xml in the program directory *was* updated correctly. I'm using the portable installation and the directory and all files are writeable.

Sorry, what I meant is that the XML scripts wouldn't be there, not that you needed to delete anything.
If you update to python 2.6.2 then you'll find everything working as it should be, the Python folk have fixed their bug.
