We should create a place for users to contribute scripts. We could either find an existing script-sharing website that will allows us to group together all the PyPN files, or a separate page on this website. It should allow for a user to post the script, a description of what it does, and allow users to comment on it. It should also allow users to rate the script, and keep track of download popularity. That way when new users come to the script repo, they can easily see the most helpful/most popular scripts.

Then we need a fancy way to install, like greasemonkey :)

There is no clear reason why we could not just add a page to the PN wiki for this. The wiki is pretty easy to use and has nice syntax high lighting.

Thoughts?

We can for now. Once the number of scripts grows large, it'll be very hard to organize (multiple versions of the same thing, overlap, sorting by popularity, comments on each script, etc).

But for now, yes a wiki page will suffice, assuming it takes file attachments. I'm going to look at this now...

I do see one problem with this: its a wiki -- other authors can edit the code.

Programmers are a particularly snooty bunch and are sure to disagree upon the best way to do something. I don't think I have ever really run across a collaborative 'snippets' section.

So like you said, it will work for now but eventually something better would have to come along.

The current guide line is to use H5 -- the problem there is that the items to do appear on the little table of contents at the top right of the page -- which would make searching for something just a little easier... Of course it may eventually lead a really long table of contents.

Yeah, we're on the honor system for now. That's why I recommended people put the author name on the first line; so when a user modifies a script, they can repost it under their name. I've added a note to the wiki, feel free to add more guidelines as we go.

I think there was a typo in "to do appear". Do they appear or don't they in a TOC? I want a big long TOC so that you can look through that list of [author] - [script name] and click on the one you want to jump to it. Not ideal for lots of scripts, but doable for now. If H5's don't show up in a TOC, we should change it to whatever will. The help docs say that a TOC shows up when there's 3 or more headings, we'll see what happens.

PS. I'm working on a python script sharing site. Very simple, but better than the wiki. Will post when I'm done.

This is awesome! Thanks for all the time you're putting into this - I appreciate it! I'll wait until there are several scripts in there and then I'll blog about it and put something on the main web site too. Having the TOC working for browsing them is a good idea, let's make sure whatever headings are used cause that to happen.

Also I note that someone (Nick?) is putting together a nice bit of PyPN documentation on the docs site - Great!

PS. I'm working on a python script sharing site. Very simple, but better than the wiki. Will post when I'm done.

Cool, that's a nice project - eventually I guess we want some kind of system a little like you can use for downloading bbpress plugins, where ratings and comments can be used. If you want we can try hosting it on the same VM hosting the rest of the pnotepad properties. Otherwise there are other options like the google app engine or something equivalent.

I have been putting in the API. For the most part this is just a RegEx reformatting of the output of the Doug's ApiInfo script. The pn module was easy (although there are some gaps I can not fill). The Scintilla module is a little different. There is a lot of information -- so while it is easy to generate a formatted listing of the pieces and parts, the generated text does not include descriptions or much usable information beyond the names of objects and argument types.

I have been trying to quickly fill in what descriptions I can, but I just don't know the API all that well. Luckily most of the functions mirror their scintilla counterpart messages so that helps.

I am afraid that the scintilla module will always be a bit sketchy but at least there will be something.

I updated the script repository page so that it has a table of contents and each script has its own little "Edit" button so that you can edit just your script rather than having to scroll down and find it.

If someone has the power to make pages (I could not see how to do it) then it would probably be good to put the API stuff on its own page. I tried to submit the scintilla module's constants and that seems to be too much for it to handle. (or there was 1 typo somewhere that ruined it for the rest of the table.)

To add a page, just put in a link to the page to the one you're editing. Clicking on that link then gives you the option to create the other page.

It's a little more organized than using a wiki page. However, it's very plain (needs a lot of UI tweaks), hasn't been fully bug tested, and requires yet-another-login (yuck). It's in python/django, so integrating with pnotepad.org may be troublesome. I'm fine keeping it on my host.

Bang on that a bit, use the "feedback" link to let me know of any problems you find. And give any and all feedback, I know it's not great yet.

And this is why Django is awesome - although my personal favorite was TurboGears, Django was equally cool and seems to have emerged as the victor.

Yeah the extra login thing is a shame, but not the end of the world. If you want to have a go running it on pnotepad.org (it's a full Debian VM, so we can run what we like) then you're more than welcome. That would let you at the user database for the forums.

I signed up fine, and have added a few scripts from my blog - two that made it in as full features since they were written but I figure are still educational.

Does it make sense to allow me to vote on my own scripts after entering them? That feels a little wrong :)

Yeah, I really like Django, and have been moving all my projects to it since I learned it a while ago. It's a pain to setup & install, with python paths, wsgi, and module searching being annoying. But once it's working, it's just amazing to develop in. It's so much better than PHP, and it's similar to Java in how structured it is (django vs. Java Enterprise Beans), but it's a whole lot simpler/easier to work with.

Regarding the host, it'd be great to get it working on pnotepad.org. I'd love to try to integrate user accounts with pnotepad. That means bbpress accounts, right?

Yeah, maybe. It's all in the DB, so I can change it later. I'm planning on moving to a thumbs-up/thumbs-down approach vs. 1-10 rating, since that's easier and simpler. Incidentally, I voted 10 for my script :)
