   I am using version 0.9.970, and I am having trouble with some special characters.

   The square root sign is entered with alt-251. PN will not accept this, and I usually end up with a v.

   The square symbol (superscript 2) is entered with alt-0178. This usually works, but when I try (and fail) to enter the square root sign (above), this character also fails. I need to restart PN to get it working again.

   The characters themselves are not critical (I can copy and paste them from other programs), but this seems to indicate a problem with character input?

   Hello!

   You have to use UTF-8-encoded files to use a square root symbol, because it's not in the default ANSI encoding. (At least not in mine, ANSI-1252.)
   I cannot type the square root with with Alt-(0)251. It's unicode U+221A...

   I cannot reproduce the square symbol bug. This char is displayed in both encodings, no matter if I typed a "v" instead of a square root.

   I can’t reproduce this bug either ... ? Hmm ...

   I always use UTF-8 encoding, and it works for most characters. I have found the Alt-251 sequence on a number of web sites (such as http://usefulshortcuts.com/alt-codes/maths-alt-codes.php), and it works for other programs (such as this one, Firefox: √), but not for pn. Is it using something unusual for keyboard input?

   It seems you're using another codepage than me (not ANSI-1252)? When I press Alt-251 I always get "¹" (superscript 1), in PNotepad the same as in Firefox. The square root is impossible for me to write with keys. I can only copy/paste from charmap.

   Wrong assertion... As I said it's Unicode U+221A or (decimal) 8730. So I can input Alt+08730. Works for me. :)
   The code Alt+0185 is also ¹ (185 is Unicode number for it). But I think that the combinations without leading zero are different depending on used codepage.

   Hm, sorry... this only works in the text input field from charmap.exe. Windows is strange.

   Square root: I can't find a way to type this in any program, the character is extended unicode and only charmap supports typing those (that I've seen).

   Superscript 1: This works for me as long as the encoding is unicode, Alt-251 inserts it.
